Thread veins are small blue or red veins that can appear anywhere on the body but most usually on the face and legs. Broken veins or telangiectasia can cause the patient to feel self-conscious and negative about their overall appearance. These tiny veins are caused by a number of factors including exposure to UV light, weather extremes, steroid creams and changes in hormones during pregnancy. Genetics also come into play with some people being more susceptible due to genetic inheritance. Standing for long periods can also produce the red veins on the legs whilst old injury sites can have these broken veins.

It is possible that hormone treatments, such as the contraceptive pill and HRT can increase the likelihood of forming thread veins. Here at Finchley Cosmetic Clinic we use sclerotherapy for treatment of veins.  Injecting the unwanted veins with a sclerosing solution causes the target vein to immediately shrink, and then dissolve over a period of weeks as the body naturally absorbs the treated vein. Sclerotherapy is a non-invasive procedure taking only about 10 minutes to perform. The downtime is minimal, in comparison to an invasive varicose vein surgery However, some very large veins or varicose veins may need to be dealt with prior to treatment on the thread veins. You will be advised during consultation if a consultation with the vascular surgeon is necessary.
